An adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron revealed today that Macron has called on British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to respect international fishing rules.

Reuters quoted the French official as telling reporters after a private face-to-face meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rome that "the goal for the two, the president and the prime minister, was to work for calm," noting that Macron told Johnson "that he expects seriousness and respect between the two sides."

For his part, Macron's office stated that he and Johnson held a meeting that lasted about 25 minutes on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rome, and they agreed to "de-escalate and pledge concrete steps as soon as possible", while no statement has yet been issued by Downing Street.

Last Thursday, France seized a British fishing vessel that entered its territorial waters without a license and issued a verbal warning to a second vessel in light of a dispute between the two countries over the right to enter fishing areas after Britain's exit from the European Union.

London's refusal to grant French fishermen the full number of fishing licenses in British waters, which France says is guaranteed to it, angered Paris, threatening punitive measures against Britain, while London announced that the punitive measures that France intends to impose will be met with appropriate measures.
