A human being was fatally injured and ten others were injured to varying degrees when a young Japanese man burst into a stabbing, arson and acid spray attack on the subway in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, today (Sunday).
According to state media reports, the young man was dressed like the Joker from the Batman comic book series and used a large butcher knife.
He sprayed acid on the faces of passers-by and set fire to flammable material in a subway car near the Kew train station.
Videos uploaded to social media by surfers showed crowds miraculously in horror as smoke enveloped the subway car.
The subway was packed with celebrants on their way to the center of the Japanese capital for Halloween parties.
The train on which the attack took place was on its way to Shinjuku Station, the busiest train station in the world.
The attacker, in his twenties, was arrested at the scene by police forces after a special anti-terrorism unit of the Tokyo Police arrived at the scene of the incident.
The background to the attack is not clear at this stage, but the Japanese newspaper Ashi Shimbon estimated that the background to the attack was mental.
