Catherine Deneuve and her flamingo in front of the lens of David Bailey, Marilyn Monroe asleep under the watchful eye of Elliott Erwitt, Madonna laughing in front of the camera of the talented Herb Ritts ... These photographs are among the most remarkable of the latter decades.

Mirrors of the eras in which they were taken, they are all of unfailing spontaneity.

Models, celebrities or simply passers-by, from Chicago to Paris, via Mexico City and London, all have passed in front of the lens of these genius photographers and the result is inevitably successful.

The annual sale of Christie's Paris, dedicated to photography, will be held on November 9, on the occasion of the Paris Photo fair of the ephemeral Grand Palais.

A hundred lots will be offered, estimates ranging from 1,200 to 100,000 euros, some lots being sold without reservation.

The sale will bring together emblematic works of major figures in photography, including Irving Penn, Steve McCurry and in particular his portrait of the Afghan, Nick Brandt and Brassaï.

At a time when the Palais Galliera is dedicating a retrospective exhibition for the centenary of

Vogue

and when the Alaïa Foundation puts the photographs of Peter Lindbergh and the work of the couturier into perspective, Christie's puts fashion photography in the spotlight. Among the most iconic prints, we find in particular a portfolio presenting ten photographs signed Helmut Newton and taken between 1973 and 1993. Each of these images was selected by the photographer himself and embodies the characteristic style of this one. The estimate is between 100,000 and 150,000 euros.

Another lot, the monumental print by Peter Lindbergh,

Mathilde on the Eiffel Tower

, dating from 1989. This photograph measures nearly two meters and is estimated between 60,000 and 80,000 euros.

It is accompanied by the snapshot from which it is directly inspired, that of photojournalist Marc Riboud

Painters of the Eiffel Tower

taken in 1953. Another snapshot by Lindbergh is also on sale,

The Wild Ones

, depicting supermodels Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz , Helena Christensen, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Karen Mulder and Stephanie Seymour, produced for Vogue in 1991 and estimated between 35,000 and 45,000 euros.

A dozen photographs signed Nick Brandt will also be on sale.

Lion, cheetah, elephant, rhino, the British photographer has traveled all his life and immortalized the most beautiful African landscapes.

The estimate of his works climbs from 4,000 to 30,000 euros.

The sale will also look at the work of Edward Burtynsky, a Canadian photographer renowned for his industrial landscapes.

This artist, whose study of the “

indelible human signature

” on the planet as well as his large-scale aerial photographs, will allow Christie's to tackle a current issue: the environment.
