Eleven people were injured today (Sunday), one of them fatally, by knife stabs, arson and acid spraying on a central railway line in Tokyo, Japanese media reported.

The suspect in the attack, a 24-year-old man who was disguised as the "Joker" from the Batman series, was arrested on the spot.

The motive for the incident, which took place on the day of the parliamentary elections, is not clear at this stage.

The wounded man is a man in his 60s, who was stabbed by the young man.

The attack took place in the evening, when many passers-by were on their way to the city center for the Halloween celebrations, on the Kyo train line towards Shinjuku, the busiest train station in the world.

One video uploaded to Twitter and broadcast on Japan's public channel showed masses of passengers fleeing a train car in which a small fire broke out a few seconds later following an explosion.

In another video, miraculous passengers were seen through the train windows to the platform, after the train made an emergency stop.

"I thought it was a Halloween prank," an eyewitness told the Yumori newspaper, describing the moment he saw other passengers running in panic towards his caravan.

"Then, I saw a man walking this way, waving slowly with a long knife."

He said the knife was covered in blood.

Vehicle services on this line remained partially disabled hours after the attack, and dozens of firefighters, police and rescue vehicles were deployed outside the station where the train stopped.
