A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck south of Sinapang on the Indonesian island of Simeulu today, but there were no reports of casualties or damage.
Reuters quoted the US Geological Survey as saying that the quake was at a depth of 6.4 km, about 254 km south of Sinapang.
Indonesia is located in an area of seismic activity in the Pacific Ocean known as the Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and earthquakes occur periodically.
