An 87-year-old man has been sentenced to a suspended sentence by the Lüneburg district court for killing his wife in need of care.
The chamber sentenced the senior to two years' imprisonment for a minor case of manslaughter on Monday after only three days of trial.
The probation period for this was set at three years, and the defendant has to bear the costs of the proceedings.
Lüneburg - The judgment (27Ks / 1501 Js 16202/20, 12/20) is not yet final.
In his justification, the judge spoke of a human tragedy that had taken place in a home in the Lüneburg district.
After a bicycle accident, the confessed defendant cared for his wife for more than 40 years and, because of his progressive dementia, saw no other way out than to stab his barely responsive, 87-year-old wife with a kitchen knife.
His subsequent suicide attempt in May last year had failed.

The public prosecutor's office had also pleaded for less serious manslaughter with a suspended sentence of two years because of the man's old age.
The defense attorney relied on a judgment of the Federal Court of Justice on an extended suicide, which had also failed.
He called for a sentence of one and a half years.
