A 21-story luxury apartment building that was under construction collapsed in Lagos, Nigeria, and they fear people may be trapped.

A 21-story building collapsed Monday in Lagos, Nigeria, and there are fears people are trapped under the rubble.

The luxury apartment building, located in the wealthy Ikoyi neighborhood of the capital, was under construction.

It is unclear how many people were inside when it collapsed.

"I thought it was an earthquake when I ran out of my apartment just after 3pm. I felt the building move and I knew something was wrong," Olu Apata, a nearby resident and president of the Bar Association, told CNN. from Nigeria.

Apata said the building has been under construction for the past two years and the developer was on site meeting potential buyers early Monday.

Videos and photos shared on social media showed people inspecting the site of the collapse, where concrete slabs were stacked in a pile of rubble.

Building collapses are a relatively common occurrence in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city, with a population of some 20 million people.

In 2019, the collapse of two different buildings, including one that housed a school, left dozens dead.

An expert told CNN at the time that more than 1,000 buildings were at risk of collapse in Lagos.
