Rare natural spectacle: for many, a little dream could come true.

With a little luck you can see the northern lights in Germany.

The reason is strong outbreak of the sun.

Berlin - Seeing the northern lights once in a lifetime is a dream for many people.

The shimmering green and purple lights in the sky are fascinating.

Northern lights are usually more likely to be observed in the polar region.

In Germany, the spectacle in the sky is rather rare.

But the chances are good in the coming nights - also in Germany and even as far as Bavaria.

The reason: a strong solar flare was already detected on Thursday.

That is why the green and purple light spectacle could be seen in our night sky.

Northern lights - a rare natural spectacle in Germany

The US space agency NASA and the weather agency NOAA announced that a large amount of high-energy particles were thrown into space during the solar flare.

These particles move towards the earth.

They are likely to collide with the Earth's atmosphere between October 29th and 31st.

The high-energy particles light up different types of atoms and molecules, which can be perceived from Earth as auroras.

Due to the strength of the eruption, these can also be seen in Central Europe and America.

Northern lights in Germany: does the weather play along?

If the sky is clear, the chances of seeing the Northern Lights are good this weekend.

In large parts of the country, the sky remains cloud-free according to the weather forecasts.

In Bavaria, however, fog could thwart onlookers' plans.

If you want to see the northern lights, you should choose a location with the lowest possible light exposure, recommends the Meteore Working Group.

Rural regions, away from big cities or, best of all, to the North and Baltic Seas.

In principle, the northern lights in Germany are to be looked for near the horizon in a northerly direction.

However, the association estimates the current probability of aurora borealis to be “very low”, as can be read on the website - as of October 30th (5pm).

But the particles from the solar eruption have not yet arrived in Germany, it is said there.

Solar flares also have negative effects: radio and GPS systems can fail

However, the solar flare will not only have positive effects such as the appearance of the northern lights in our latitudes.

According to the space agencies NASA and NOAA, it was an eruption of the highest category, which accordingly can also disrupt radio traffic and GPS systems or cause them to fail for a short time.

Scientists already detected a strong solar flare in July.

Eruptions of this magnitude usually take place every 11 years in a phase of maximum activity on the sun.

The German Weather Service (DWD) reports that during such times, polar lights can be observed in northern Germany in about ten nights.

The strongest recorded solar flare was in 1859. At that time, the northern lights could even be seen in Cuba and Hawaii.
