A project for regenerative agriculture was launched in As-Suwayda with the aim of spreading environmentally friendly agricultural methods and achieving self-sufficiency through the cultivation of home gardens and enhancing the role of farms in protecting the environment and contributing to reducing the waste of non-renewable natural resources.
The project, according to its director and head of the Organic Production Department in the Directorate of Agriculture in Sweida, Engineer Reham Morshed, is being held in cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform and the United Nations Development Program. Gaia, Mexico.
Engineer Morshed indicated that during the training phase, technicians were introduced to many regenerative farming techniques such as “intensive ponds, natural compost, compost rich in fungi, biochar or “biochar” technology, wood vinegar and many others, with the application of various technologies in an experimental range between farmers and technicians, and then the first phase was concluded with a workshop A work and exhibition in which the applied techniques were introduced and some agricultural products produced in the experiments held by some farmers were presented.
According to the Regenerative Agriculture Project Supervisor, Engineer Omar Saeed, the farmers who are willing to work under the terms of organic and sustainable agriculture and the application of intensive biological farming techniques are being trained in the project's target towns from the towns of Arman, Raha, and Mazraa to apply regenerative farming techniques.
Eng. Saeed indicated that after the farmers move to production, they will be linked to a marketing network to facilitate the sale and introduction of their products within the local market in a way that guarantees their quality, specifications and access to the consumer at competitive prices.
Regenerative agriculture is a set of agricultural principles and practices that lead to increasing biodiversity, soil fertility and richness, improving watersheds and enhancing ecosystem services, in which products are provided free from the effects of chemicals resulting from the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
