A new video showing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan having difficulty walking has heightened claims among opposition figures that he is not in the health line. In recent months, speculation has been rife about the future of 67-year-old Erdogan, after he appeared to have difficulty speaking and moving in public. His office denied this and posted response videos, including one in which he plays basketball.

In the latest video, recorded last Friday on the 98th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic, Erdogan is seen standing among Turkish flags at the Presidential Palace in Ankara after receiving greetings from guests at the venue. After announcing the end of the ceremony, Erdogan turned left and was documented having difficulty walking and moving forward while his hands remained motionless. His assistants quickly removed a checkpoint on the stage to clear the way for him.

Erdogan, who was scheduled to fly to the Glasgow climate conference from Rome, where he attended the G-20 summit this weekend, returned to Turkey yesterday claiming his security requirements had not been met.

However, claims have surfaced that the real reason behind Erdogan's decision to skip the event was his health issues.

During the summit in Rome, Erdogan was documented holding the shoulder of one of his aides and his opponents interpreted this as another sign of his poor health.

Special shoes

Many of the president's opponents noted that in 2002 he called on then-Prime Minister Bolent Ajwit to resign over health problems, claiming he was incapable of fulfilling his role.

Erdogan came to power a few months after serving, and has since led Turkey as prime minister or president.

Social media users claim that Erdogan wears special shoes that help maintain balance and are usually worn by the elderly.

Canceled the trip to the conference in Glasgow due to "security issues".

Concern over Erdogan's future, about two years before the presidential election in which he faces a significant challenge from the opposition, has grown after an article published last month in Foreign Policy magazine.

Stephen Cook, an expert on the Middle East and Africa, listed in the article a series of incidents in which Erdogan was documented using his wife and advisers to walk and having difficulty speaking during a meeting with members of the ruling party that was televised. He noted several possible candidates to succeed Erdogan, on the possibility that another powerful man could rule post-Erdogan Turkey, including intelligence chief Khan Fidan, Defense Minister Holosi Akar and Interior Minister Suleiman Soilo.

Erdogan's communications director, Fertin Elton, claimed after the publication of the article that Erdogan may be too ill to face 2023 is "fake news".

"Fake news used to be a problem of social media. It seems that now the mainstream media also suffers from the same problem. When even large organizations spread such lies it is very worrying," Elton tweeted, along with a screenshot of the article.
