London (CNN Business) -

Elon Musk has offered to sell some of his Tesla shares "right now" if the UN can prove that $ 6 billion will solve world hunger.

His remarks came after the director of the UN World Food Program (WFP), David Beasley, challenged the ultra-rich, and in particular the two richest men in the world, Jeff Bezos and Musk, to "step forward now, in one fell swoop" to help solve world hunger in an interview with CNN last week.

"$ 6 billion to help 42 million people who are literally going to die if we don't reach them. It's not complicated," Beasley said on CNN's "Connect the World" with Becky Anderson.

That sum would equal roughly 2% of Musk's net worth.

In a Twitter post on Sunday, the Tesla CEO said: "If the WFP can describe in this Twitter thread exactly how $ 6 billion will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla shares right now and do it."

"But it must be open accounting, so that the public can see precisely how the money is being spent," he added.

Beasley responded to Musk's post on Twitter, saying that he could assure the billionaire that the WFP had the systems in place for transparency and open source accounting.

"US $ 6 billion will not solve world hunger, but it will prevent geopolitical instability, mass migration and save 42 million people from the brink of starvation. An unprecedented crisis and a perfect storm due to covid / conflict crises. / climatic, "he added.

Addressing the billionaires directly in the CNN interview, he said: "What if it was your daughter who starved? What if it was your family who starved? Just open your eyes and help."

As of Monday, Musk's net worth was $ 311 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, making him the richest man in the world.
