A revolution in European basketball.
Euroleague CEO and the man who founded it, Jordi Bartomeu, was fired after 21 years in office.
The decision was made today (Tuesday) at the meeting of the 11 teams with the A license in the Euroleague, who decided that the CEO will leave the position on June 30, 2022.
The decision fell on the edge of one vote and at the end of the vote the result was 5: 6.
Maccabi Tel Aviv was among the proponents of relegation along with the two Greeks Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, as well as CSKA Moscow, Anadolu Efes and Milan.
The move was predictable.
In recent months, a number of clubs have pushed for the replacement of the CEO and dominant man in the factory for more than two decades.
They held a number of meetings and the first move to weaken him was to remove him from the meetings of the plant's board of directors.
The main argument was against his conduct on the economic issue: inability to increase revenue and failure to realize the marketing potential of the Euroleague.
The teams claimed that their revenues from the plant, which is considered second in strength after the NBA, should be much higher.
Now, Bartomeu may be offered a job as a Euroleague consultant, but will likely refuse.
