(CNN) -

Sergio "Kun" Agüero will be off the pitch for three months after undergoing a "cardiological evaluation," confirmed Barcelona.

The Argentine had to leave the field of play 40 minutes into the match against Alavés (1-1) after falling to the ground and clutching his chest, but was able to leave the field without help.

The newspaper Sport and the EFE agency later reported that Agüero suffered a cardiac arrhythmia.

"The first team player Sergio Agüero has undergone a diagnostic and therapeutic process by Dr. Josep Brugada," Barça reported in a statement.

"It is not available for selection and the efficacy of the treatment will be evaluated over the next three months to determine its recovery process," he added.

"The Argentine was taken to the hospital for a cardiological evaluation on Saturday after Barça's game against Alavés in which the Barça forward felt bad in the first half and was replaced before the break by Philippe Coutinho."

Agüero has struggled with injuries since joining the Blaugrana team from Manchester City and was only able to make his debut in October.

His absence will only aggravate the problems of Barça, who have just fired Ronald Koeman as coach after an unpromising start to the season.

Barcelona are in ninth place in the League after 11 games, nine points behind leaders Real Sociedad, and face a great duel against Dinamo Kiev in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Interim coach Sergi Barjuan will want to get all three points, as Barcelona occupies third place in Group E, behind Bayern Munich and Benfica, with only one victory in the three games played to date.

The latest on Eriksen

On the other hand, Inter Milan informed that they will allow Christian Eriksen to leave to continue his football career.

The Danish midfielder suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed during his country's first match at Euro 2020 against Finland in June.

He received life-saving medical assistance on the pitch and was subsequently fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), a small device that is placed under the skin to control heart rhythm.

It is connected to the heart with fine wires and is able to regulate abnormal heart rhythms by means of electric shocks.

"In other countries"

However, Eriksen is still unable to play professional football in Italy.

"It must be taken into account that as a result of a serious injury that occurred during the European Championship in June 2021, the Italian medical authority temporarily inhibited the player from sporting activity this season," Inter said in a statement last week.

"Although the current conditions of the player do not meet the requirements to achieve sporting fitness in Italy, the same could be achieved, instead, in other countries where the player could resume competitive activity."
