The municipal council accepted the referendum in a special meeting.

One thing is certain: the senior citizen pen will not take up more space than the Wiedemann Clinic.

- The referendum that the Ambacher author and singer Anatol Regnier and his colleagues have initiated in the past few weeks has "very much occupied the minds and the public", as Mayor Michael Grasl said in the special session. The demand of the citizens 'initiative: The planned senior citizens' monastery in Ambach should not take up more space than the old clinic, of which only ruins are now standing. The number mentioned was 3918 square meters. The upper limit for the buildable area by the “Kuratorium Wohnen im Alter” is 4784 square meters.

The number 3918, however, turned out to be inconclusive after research by the municipality. "In order to achieve an exact result, there is nothing more honest than measuring the area again," explained Christian Weigl, who is accompanying the municipality on this urban development project. This is exactly what has happened in the now inaccessible area in the past few days. "We really didn't make it easy for ourselves," assured Grasl. Overgrown access roads were partially exposed for this purpose. The result: Contrary to what was claimed in the referendum, the area of the Wiedemann Clinic covers 5060 square meters.

How to deal with this surprising result?

After all, the question was apparently based on false facts.

As the lawyer for the community, Gerhard Spieß explained, the community has the opportunity to reject the referendum as inadmissible, to allow it as a referendum or to have the issue resolved in the community council.

A referendum would then be superfluous.

Mayor Michael Grasl strongly advocated the latter solution.

“We're all pursuing the same goal,” he said.

“It was always clear to us as a community that the Wiedemann Clinic had to remain the benchmark and that the new project had to fit into the clinic's footprint,” he explained.

The result was then also clear: With 14: 0 votes (three councilors were absent, excused), the council voted that the senior citizen monastery should not use more space than the Wiedemann clinic.

Local councilor Stefan Holzheu (voter group Holzhausen) had the last word: “Especially as an Ambacher I am happy to see that the new is not bigger than the old.” He is therefore also grateful to the initiators of the citizens' initiative that this has become clear.

Anatol Regnier was amazed at the end of the session.

“They took the wind out of our sails,” he says.

From the context of the citizens' initiative it is said that the figures that the municipality has determined will be checked very carefully.
