Another case of avian influenza occurred in a farm poultry population in Brandenburg.

The H5N1 pathogen was detected on Wednesday in a private poultry farm in Burg im Spreewald by the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), as the Ministry of Consumer Protection confirmed on request.

First of all, the RBB reported on it.

Potsdam - The smallest facility with around 80 chickens and ducks is only around two kilometers away from the first case in a poultry population in the Spree-Neisse district.

This means that the protection zone within a three-kilometer radius of the affected company and an observation zone within a ten-kilometer radius have been slightly adapted, according to spokesman Dominik Lenz.

There are around 300 poultry farmers in the protection zone, from small businesses to large-scale plants.

They would now have to report their stocks and keep the animals exclusively in the barn for at least 30 days.

The general decree on the restricted areas applies from this Wednesday.

Lenz said no major killings would have to take place in the factory in Burg.

Most of the animals have already died.

It is strange that so far this season no case has been found in wild birds, but farm animals are directly affected.

"That is questionable," said Lenz.

The cause is still being investigated.

Good sugar beet harvest in southern Germany

The sugar beet harvest in southern Germany is good.

The sugar yield per hectare is currently around ten percent above the average of the past five years, said the managing director of the Association of South German Sugar Beet Growers, Fred Zeller, of the German Press Agency.

"The pretty good expectations are confirmed - but it is not the case that the trees grow into the sky."

Avian influenza often occurs with the migration of birds in autumn, initially in wild geese and then ebbs away again in spring.

This summer, the responsible FLI also found some cases in Germany in the summer.

The ministry announced the first case in the Spree-Neisse district this autumn only a few days ago.

Previously there had already been cases of avian influenza in other federal states.

In Brandenburg there were 11 outbreaks in useful populations in the past autumn and winter up to spring, and 159,000 animals were killed.

The disease never really came to a standstill, said Lenz.
