Judge prohibits calling "victims" who Kyle Rittenhouse shot 1:39
(CNN) -
A friend of Kyle Rittenhouse testified Tuesday that the gunman was "freaking out," pale and sweaty after he shot and wounded two people during riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last summer.
"He said he had to do it, that it was in self-defense, that people were trying to hurt him," Dominick Black, 20, said in a Kenosha court.
Black testified that Rittenhouse did not indicate whether anyone had a firearm or knife.
What you need to know about the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, the teenager accused of shooting two people to death during protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin
Black, who bought the gun Rittenhouse used in the shootings, was the first witness in a trial that will ask jurors to evaluate the distinction between self-defense and so-called "vigilantism."
The trial began Tuesday with opening statements when prosecutors and defense attorneys offered opposing accounts of what happened last August during the Kenosha riots after a police officer shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back.
Prosecutors described Rittenhouse, 17 at the time, as an assailant, but his defense attorney said he only fired in self-defense.
The trial will feature multiple videos showing Rittenhouse's movements that night, including an infrared video shot from above Kenosha.
Most of the facts of what happened on August 25, 2020 are not up for debate;
rather, the heart of the judgment is the analysis of Rittenhouse's actions and whether they can be considered "reasonable."
"This is not a detective story," said defense attorney Mark Richards.

Rittenhouse, now 18, fired an AR-15-style gun eight times in total during the riots: four shots at Joseph Rosenbaum who was unarmed, two shots at an unknown individual who was unarmed, one shot at an Anthony Huber who was unarmed and shot Gaige Grosskreutz who was armed, Binger said.
Rosenbaum, 36, and Huber, 26, were killed and Grosskreutz, now 27, was injured.
Rittenhouse is charged with five felonies: first degree manslaughter, first degree reckless manslaughter, first degree attempted manslaughter and two first degree counts of recklessly endangering safety.
He is also charged with possession of a dangerous weapon when he was under the age of 18, a misdemeanor, and a non-criminal violation of failure to comply with an emergency order.
He has pleaded not guilty.
The teenager quickly became a polarizing figure in the country's partisan battles during the Black Lives Matter protests last summer, which led to cases of violence in Minneapolis, Atlanta, Philadelphia and elsewhere.
Rittenhouse's presence in Kenosha was also part of what experts warned is an increase in armed paramilitary groups of amateurs in protests across the country.
The trial is expected to last just over two weeks, Judge Bruce Schroeder said.
A 20-person jury, consisting of 11 women and nine men, was selected on Monday, and that number will be reduced to 12 before deliberations begin.
