Minneapolis voters decided to keep the city's police department intact after protests over George Floyd's murder swept across the United States last year, according to a CNN projection.

The proposed amendment would have removed the Police Department from the city charter and replaced it with a new Department of Public Safety.

Context:

The measure, which was proposed by an activist group called Yes 4 Minneapolis, emerged more than a year after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd in May 2020.

Floyd's death at the hands of a white police officer sparked national and global protests against police brutality, racism and social injustice.
