The architect Axel Wolf from Tegernsee has been awarded the State Prize for Village Renewal and Building Culture for his planning to renovate the listed Boschnhaus in Vagen (Rosenheim district).

"More courage for contemporary architecture", demands Wolf with a view to the building culture at Tegernsee.

Tegernsee / Vagen - The so-called Boschnhaus was built in 1435 and is one of the oldest buildings in Vagen.

In the end it served as a prop store until the fruit and horticultural association Vagen-Mittenkirchen came up with the idea of turning it into a meeting place for young and old.

Planning began in 2012 and the work was completed in 2018.

And now it's even award-winning.

State award for architect from Tegernsee: Boschnhaus an identity-creating meeting place

This is also thanks to an architect from Tegernsee, because the new Boschnhaus was built according to plans by Axel Wolf. The 64-year-old architect, the municipality of Feldkirchen Westerham and the horticultural association Vagen have received this year's state award for village renewal and building culture from Agriculture Minister Michaela Kaniber. The prize is awarded every two years and is endowed with 3000 euros. Axel Wolf and his project are therefore in good company with 15 other award winners who were selected from 1,700 applicants. All projects were implemented in the course of village renewal and state subsidized. The Free State has made a total of 50 million euros available for this. "With the newly constructed part of the building, the Boschnhaus impresses with its outstanding architectural quality",it says in the laudation. The barn character has been preserved and modernized. With the village-friendly implementation, an identity-creating meeting point had been created.

It was a favorable combination at the time, says Axel Wolf modestly and remembers how he got the job.

Because he had already made a name for himself through a number of projects in the community, he was entrusted with the revision of an existing draft.

“That worked right away,” says Wolf, referring to the collaboration that followed and the enormous initiative with which the Boschnhaus was realized.

The project was a Herculean task in every respect - financially too.

Building cost subsidies from the community, the association's own contribution, donations, a loan and subsidies from village renewal and Leader funds contributed to the realization of the project, which cost around 790,000 euros.

A little more courage for contemporary architecture.

Axel Wolf

Would such a meeting center in the middle of the village also be possible on Tegernsee? Wolf is skeptical: “The communities around the lake have grown differently, the center of each community is the street for us. In addition, "according to Wolf's experience," contemporary regionalism is obviously not desired, but rather traditional country house style. People just like to see wooden cladding and flowers. The architect, who grew up in Rottach-Egern, thinks that a little more courage for contemporary architecture would be good for the Tegernsee valley. Nevertheless, it is “refreshing” what young architects are also able to achieve here. As far as the subject of urban development is concerned, he misses an overarching framework here. "The common thread has to be right, but that would take decades of work."

With the Boschnhaus, Wolf not only met the taste of the Vagen family, but also of the state government.

He reports that there are already plans for the 3,000 euros in prize money: These will be used to finance natural ashlar stones, which will then be built into a stream in front of the Boschnhaus.

As an attraction for children and further enrichment in the middle of the village.
