Holzkirchen - wood or steel for the new building yard in Marschall?

This question has now been discussed in the Holzkirchen municipal council.

The Holzkirchen market town council recently dealt once more with the new building yard in Marschall.

This time, the committee had to vote on whether the supporting structure of the approximately 100-meter-long and approximately 13.50-meter-high hall should be made of steel or wood and whether the cost calculation of around 27 million euros was appropriate.

Architect Nicolas Neumann from the working group “Arge Studio Corso & Tucher Consulting Engineers” briefed the municipal councils about the current planning status of the building yard.

Accordingly, by and large, the design, which was worked out closely with the building yard employees and approved by all sides, remains the same.

Advantages and disadvantages of wood and steel

However, in the previous meeting the question was raised whether the structure of the large hall could not also be made of wood.

Technically, as Neumann said, this is of course feasible.

As project manager Björn Nohe from the Drees und Sommer project planning office calculated, the timber construction is considerably more expensive with additional costs of around 360,000 euros.

In addition to the pure material additional costs, he soberly listed the advantages and disadvantages.

He saw a disadvantage of wood, that the roof would have to be about 80 centimeters higher, which would result in poorer exposure to light from the overhead lights and increase heating costs by an estimated 1,000 euros a year due to the increased cubage.

On the other hand, he charged annual additional costs of around 5,000 euros for fire protection measures for a steel structure.

According to Nohe's calculations, the additional costs for the wood variant would still be covered by the reserves.

But he warned against attacking them further in the current phase: "The decision ecology or economy is now yours."

The construction yard is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2023

The municipal council Josef Franz (CSU) recognized the ecological obligation. In this case, however, he clearly advocated using the cheaper steel variant. The FWG parliamentary group around Deputy Mayor Birgit Eibl came to the same conclusion. Green spokesman Robert Wiechmann expressed his displeasure with this: “After ten successful and exemplary years of timber construction, should the opposite be done here, and preference given to climate-damaging steel? I don't think that's a great story, to put it mildly. ”The majority of the committee decided against the votes of the Green parliamentary group and Elisabeth Dasch and Simon Ammer (both SPD) in favor of the steel structure.

There was then unanimous agreement regarding the approval of the draft planning and the cost calculation.

The goal, as architect Neumann said, is to be able to put the new building yard into operation at the end of 2023.
