The British newspaper Express published a report warning that global warming will lead to the disappearance of many countries due to melting ice and rising sea levels.
The newspaper pointed out that "the issue includes the regions that could be affected by climate change, which are Kiribati, Tuvalu and the Marshall Islands."
For her part, Belenisa Alofa, coordinator of the Climate Action Network, a global environmental non-governmental organization in Kiribati, said: "We are not talking about one-off events. We are talking about a natural phenomenon that threatens to swallow our homes," calling on countries around the world to take measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transform to renewable energy sources.
Climate scientists have repeatedly pointed out the need to limit the rise in global temperature within a degree and a half in order to mitigate the negative effects of global warming. To this end, more than 190 countries signed the Paris Agreement in 2015, which includes an action plan to achieve this goal.
