The president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, condemned the incidents that occurred on Wednesday in the province of Arauco in which the police and the military confronted what he described as a "terrorist group", which he did not identify .

In this context, this Thursday Piñera reiterated the need to re-extend the current constitutional state of exception in the southern macrozone, which lasted until November 11.

The incidents resulted in the death of a civilian, in addition to three wounded and two detainees.

In explaining the government's version, Piñera said that the Chief of Defense of the Biobío Region, Admiral Jorge Parga, informed him that two police patrols, supported by members of the Navy and the Army, "were ambushed and attacked by a group of violentists who used firearms, some of heavy caliber ".

According to the authorities, while the events are being investigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office, firearms were seized from the detainees, including a rifle, as well as war ammunition and a vehicle with a report of theft.

The president said that "during the validity of this state of emergency, the Armed Forces do not replace the Carabineros and the Investigative Police in their police work," although "they can collaborate with them by providing all the logistical and technological support of 3 communications and transport, and surveillance, patrolling and protection ".
