Puchheim - With around 40 participants, including city councilors, the tree tour on October 27 at Alois-Harbeck-Platz in Puchheim was well attended.

The event was organized by the “Klimawache Puchheim” and the local branch of the Federation of Nature Conservation.

Already on September 30th, more than 100 citizens testified that they do not agree with the planned tree felling in the course of the redesign of Alois-Harbeck-Platz. A wide media coverage reported that the demonstrators were primarily interested in the ten or so 50-year-old maple, linden and beech trees on the corner of Josefstrasse and Allinger Strasse, which are well worth preserving.

Now a tree tour took place under the direction of the former head of the forestry office and BN member Hans-Jürgen Gulder.

"The conservative future scenario is frightening," Gulder begins his tree tour and explains that climate change will create a radically different landscape in 50 years - without forests as we know them today.

It is all the more important to leave every tree where possible and to plant new ones.

For example, the approximately 60 planned tree felling at Alois-Harbeck-Platz would require at least 1,000 to 2,000 new plantings to compensate for their ecosystem service.

Lots of questions about recommendations for remodeling

The participants, including some city councilors, asked many questions about recommendations for the renovation.

"I was particularly pleased that Mr. Gulder described the group of trees on the hill as 'holy'", said Maria Rothbucher, initiator of the event.

A green island like this one has many advantages for the new city center: its cooling capacity is irreplaceable on hot summer days.

The fine dust filter and the rainwater retention function should not be underestimated either.

As an extension of the city park, it creates an important fresh air corridor.

In principle, the emotional and health value of trees for humans should not be forgotten, which is why Förster Gulder recommends planting as many trees and other plants as possible on the new Alois-Harbeck-Platz.

The Puchheim urban development committee meets at the beginning of November.

This will show what value the city councils will ascribe to trees for the future of Puchheim.
