The environmental working group (AG) of the Miesbach grammar school has declared war on global environmental problems: The students took part in the youth campaign plastic pirates.

Miesbach - The Miesbach high school students examined the Schlierach for micro- and macro-plastic as part of the plastic pirate youth campaign and freed the area from rubbish.

The campaign was developed in 2016 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and is primarily intended to sensitize children and young people to sustainability.

"We are now also making sure that we are living more sustainably at home," said a fifth grader.

Liss Schwabe was also happy about the campaign: “I've always wanted to try out a garbage gripper like this,” reported the student with a smile.

She joined the working group to do something useful in her free time.

And she is not alone in that.

The Umwelt-AG is not a compulsory subject.

"The students do it out of idealism," said teacher Martina Stahl enthusiastically.

"Schoolchildren are unlikely to be very busy" - collecting network supports work on the Schlierach

Equipped with garbage bags, buckets and grabs, the high school students recently marched to the nearby Schlierach.

From the bridge there, they let a collection network provided by the project management into the water to examine the river for microplastics.

"The network is now collecting for us," announced the teacher and asked the students to search the area for more rubbish in the meantime.

This was collected, separated and labeled.

The garbage station filled up after just a few minutes.

Teacher Matthias Brandstäter also confirmed that this was to be expected: “The students are unlikely to be very eager to do what they are doing.” They had already met to collect rubbish before, albeit within a smaller radius.

Evaluation takes place in the research workshop: project results are published on a digital map

The scientific evaluation of the finds takes place in the research workshop in Kiel, which specializes in the support of schoolchildren, students and teachers.

The results will then be published on a digital map as part of the Plastic Pirates project to support existing research on the amount of different types of plastic waste.

The grammar school had already organized environmental campaigns such as a bee garden or the construction of insect hotels.

Presentations on correct waste separation as well as a sustainability week and a waste separation concept for each classroom should also help to raise awareness.
