An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit southern New Zealand today.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred 298 km southwest of the New Zealand city of Bluff, at a depth of 10 km from the surface of the earth.

There were no reports of casualties or injuries as a result of the earthquake.
