On October 21, the separatists called for the non-participation and postponement of the final referendum on the self-determination of New Caledonia, organized on December 12
(three referendums on the independence of New Caledonia have already taken place, the first in 1987, then, in application of the Matignon agreements (1988) modified by the Nouméa agreement (1998), two referendums were called in 2018 and 2020, all won by the loyalists, but one final referendum, the possibility of which was provided for by the Nouméa agreement, was requested by the separatists and is due to take place on December 12, NLDR).
This boycott, decided by a few, takes the Caledonians hostage by threatening to deprive them of their freedom to express their wish to remain, or not, within the French Republic and to project themselves, finally, towards the future. .
