The parole board decided today (Thursday) to release Sigalit Haimovich, who was convicted in 2002 of the murder of 18-year-old Assaf Steirman in 1996.

At the request of the prosecution, the judge approved a delay in execution on release for seven days due to opposition from Steirman's parents and the prosecution.

The release will be delayed for a week until an appeal is filed.

Haimovich is due to be released in January 2025. The Central District Attorney's Office opposed the request for release.

Her two previous requests, in 2018 and 2019, were denied.

Advocate Zion Amir, representing Haimovich along with Advocate Inbar Rosenbaum, said: "This is a legal battle that has been going on for the past three years and has included appeals to the District Court and the Supreme Court. However, she is a prisoner who has served more than 20 years in prison and has undergone an extraordinary rehabilitation procedure that justifies her release from prison. "

"His death is an integral part of my life and will continue to be," Sigalit Haimovich told the Parole Board.

"I'm Assaf's killer. I'm ashamed to be Assaf's killer and I hurt to be Assaf's killer. I do not expect anyone to ever forgive me."

Assaf Steirman, 18, was murdered in December 1996 in the Ussishkin grove, between Kfar Saba and Hod Hasharon.

The murder remained unsolved for four years, until in December 2000, Rei Horev's wife complained to the police that he had attacked her and said that after their marriage he confessed to her about the murder he had committed.

Horev was arrested and confessed to the act.

Horev murdered Steirman in the presence of Sigalit Haimovich, who assisted him in the act, and Lehi Gluzman.

Haimovich, 17, at the time of the incident, was sentenced to 24 years in prison.
