In Bavaria, significantly more people died in 2020 than in the previous year.

One reason is deaths as a result of a corona infection.

However, there are far more common causes.

Munich - The statisticians registered 143,367 deaths in the whole of Bavaria in 2020.

That is 6.7 percent more than in the previous year.

The number of deaths in 2019 was 134,313.

Since the influx in 2020 was very low (15,500), the numbers are easily comparable this time.

The statisticians of the State Office in Fürth have broken down the most common causes of death in their own analysis - from cancer to Covid-19 * to suicides.

Here are the main results:

Corona deaths in Bavaria: Not number one of the most common causes of death

  • Cardiovascular diseases:

Almost 50,000 people have died from a disease of the cardiovascular system.

It's a question of age: over 90 percent of the dead were at least 65 years old.

6456 people died of an acute heart attack, almost two thirds of them were men.

  • Cancer: The

second leading cause of death was cancer - with 32,182 cases, every fifth death was due to tumors.

The most common type of cancer that leads to death, with 10,350 cases, were tumors of the stomach and intestines.

2832 people died from breast cancer.

Another fact: every fifth cancer death was younger than 65, so it's not just a question of age.

  • Corona:

Information on the number of corona deaths is particularly controversial. The question of whether there is a so-called excess mortality in Bavaria (and in the rest of Germany) is still controversial. Only recently, a study by the University of Duisburg-Essen found that there was no excess mortality in Germany despite around 34,000 corona deaths in 2020. Because there were opposing effects, such as fewer flu deaths or a decrease in road deaths. "If one takes into account the aging of society, the study authors can even prove an under-mortality for Germany for 2020," says epidemiologist Bernd Kowall from the Institute for Medical Informatics. This means that fewer people died than would actually have been expected based on the statistics.

The study does not make any statements about Bavaria.

The State Office for Statistics in Bavaria avoids statements about the term excess mortality, but states soberly: The number of Covid-19 deceased * of the total number of deaths was five percent.

There were 7222 corona deaths in Bavaria in 2020, of which 3526 women and 3696 men.

"Covid-19 as an individual diagnosis was therefore more common in 2020 than the causes of death, heart attack or lung cancer," said press spokesman Michael Blabst.

Corona deaths in Bavaria: Munich with the most victims in the pandemic

For the year 2021, the number of corona deaths will be even higher: As of Thursday, there have been 8948 Covid 19 deaths so far this year.

Munich has recorded the most corona deaths since the pandemic occurred in Bavaria with 1,381 deaths.

But the number of corona deaths in the Rosenheim district (489 deaths so far) is terrifying.

  • Other causes of death:

1523 people committed suicide in Bavaria in 2020, three quarters of them men.

The number of Bavarians killed in traffic accidents is lower than before, but at 577 cases it is still high.

There were 2364 deaths from liver disease.

As a result of dementia, 2,625 men died immediately, but 5,007 women.

The global coronavirus pandemic will continue to determine the year 2021. The corona numbers in Germany, Austria, Spain, France, India and the USA.
