Screams, people running, fear and uncertainty were experienced in a tourist area near Cancun due to a shooting.
Eric Krop, from Whitefish, Montana, spoke to CNN from inside the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun in Puerto Morelos.
He described the moments surrounding the shooting involving an alleged drug gang Thursday on the beach near the hotel.
Eric and Adnrew Krop are happy to have their names used on the air and online.
Eric said he was at the hotel complex with Vacaya, a gay destination travel company, hired as a vocalist to perform at the venue.
"I just got to a pool at the resort, all of a sudden we heard what we thought were firecrackers, but they kept going and then they bounced and people started running and screaming," Eric said.
"My friends and I ducked and started running. I got separated from my friends. I just went to any room because I didn't have my key or my phone. I ran into two guys and an employee whose name tag said Enrique ... him He took us to a room. "
"We closed the door behind us and we hid there and barricaded ourselves behind a mattress. We were there at 2:50 pm Cancun time, that's when I called my husband Andrew for the first time, and we hid there for an hour or so. 90 minutes. Andrew had contacted the consulate and embassy and they told me they knew about the situation. "

"I'm fine. We feel like a lot of people are fine. We saw paramedics. I don't know if there are injuries. People are very shocked."
"I called the police at 911 and they said everything was over and it was safe and I saw groups of people hiding being escorted into the lobby. One of the security officers said it was okay to go out. I met up with my friends. We hugged. ".
