The North Rhine-Westphalian SPD party and parliamentary group leader Thomas Kutschaty wants to run for the office of deputy party chairman at the federal party conference of the Social Democrats in December.
The SPD general secretary Nadja Lüders confirmed on Friday the German press agency.
North Rhine-Westphalia had to play a "major role" with the strongest SPD state association at federal level, said Lüders.
Düsseldorf - After the resignation of the SPD federal party leader Norbert Walter-Borjans from North Rhine-Westphalia, it was important for the local SPD to continue to play a strong role in the federal executive board, according to the “New Westphalian” from the party leadership.
Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil had previously announced that he would run again for the office as one of several vice-party leaders.

The North Rhine-Westphalian Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst has called on the CDU to develop more of its own profile.
"We have to trust ourselves again to not only follow the zeitgeist, but also to shape it," said Wüst on Saturday at the state delegates' meeting of the SME and Economic Union of North Rhine-Westphalia in Rheine.
The voters wanted to see the direction and attitude of the CDU.

Kutschaty (53) is also the top candidate of the SPD in the NRW state elections in May 2022. According to surveys, the SPD is currently well ahead of the ruling CDU in the most populous state.
Kutschaty thus becomes the challenger to the new Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU).
