Agence France-Presse quoted the 15 member states of the council as saying in a joint statement read out to reporters by the Mexican ambassador to the United Nations, Juan Ramon, that “the council calls for an end to hostilities and the negotiation of a permanent ceasefire,” calling for “creating conditions for the start of a comprehensive Ethiopian national dialogue for a solution.” the crisis".
The Security Council also renewed its support for the territorial integrity and unity of Ethiopia.
The announcement by the Security Council comes shortly after an Ethiopian armed group called the "Tigray People's Liberation Front" threatened to advance on the capital, Addis Ababa, after nearly a year of clashes with the Ethiopian army.
