Sonthofen - 51 artists from the Gedok Munich network present their work in the exhibition »Strong Women«.

With the show “Strong Women”, the cultural advisor Petra Müller and the artistic director of the Stadthausgalerie, Uta Römer, want to give space to the gender issue.

“It is the first exhibition in the Stadthausgalerie in which only women are exhibiting,” reports Artistic Director Uta Römer.

Making the artistic positions of female artists visible and giving them a platform in the region was a matter of concern to her and cultural advisor Petra Müller.

International art market prefers men

"An inventory in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art in the late 1980s led to a storm of indignation: Less than five percent of the works in the contemporary art department came from women," says the exhibition text.

And further: “In the meantime, every third work of art in contemporary museum collections in Germany is by women and at German art academies women make up more than half of the budding professionals in the field of art.

And yet there is still some inclination, so the works of art by women on the international art market are usually valued lower than those of their male colleagues. "

Gedok - most traditional organization for women artists

The freelance curator Katia Rid and the visual artists Dörthe Bäumer and Ergül Cengiz from the Gedok Munich network were therefore invited by the city of Sonthofen to curate an exhibition tailored precisely to the rooms of the Stadthausgalerie.

The Gedok is the largest and most traditional artist organization in the German-speaking area and was founded in 1926 as the "Association of German and Austrian Art Associations of All Art Genres".

Round table and performance

51 artists from the Gedok Munich network are now presenting their work.

With painting, photography, drawing, object, installation and video, a wide range of fine arts can be seen as well as glass works, paper objects and jewelry from the applied field.

An overarching topic was dispensed with in order to give space to the variety of positions, contents, discussions and forms of expression.

“Strong Women” can be seen from November 6th to December 12th in the Stadthausgalerie Sonthofen Tuesday to Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 3pm to 6pm.

A round table on gender issues will take place on Saturday, November 20 at 3 p.m.

Afterwards, from 4 p.m., visitors are invited to be part of Anja Uhlig's stone exchange performance
