The United Nations General Assembly voted by an overwhelming majority in favor of a resolution establishing the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
Wafa news agency reported that the General Assembly adopted the decision on the right of self-determination for the Palestinian people with a majority of 158 votes, while 5 countries and the occupation entity opposed it, while 10 countries abstained.
In a statement carried by Wafa Agency, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the decision unanimously adopted by the Third Committee, the “Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs,” noting that the decision reaffirms the right of the Palestinians to self-determination, including the right to have their own independent state, Palestine. It also urges all States and organizations of the United Nations system to continue to support the Palestinian people and help them achieve their right to self-determination at the earliest.
The Foreign Ministry indicated that this decision is an international response to the crimes and violations of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinians, calling on the member states of the United Nations to shoulder their responsibilities to protect the rights of the Palestinian people and take practical measures to end the occupation.
The Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, explained that this vote indicates an international consensus to support the right of self-determination for the Palestinian people, and also confirms the international community's support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people despite the occupation measures and the pressure of the United States of America to bring about a change in this principled and consistent international position.
