Opinion | The Channel That Changed the Arab Media Israel today

2021-11-06T23:55:18.206Z

Before social media broke out, al-Jazeera was the first to broadcast live from anywhere in the Middle East.

For a quarter of a century, the main television channel in the Arab world, Al-Jazeera, has been broadcasting from everywhere and at all times.

In fact, from its inception in November 1996 until the beginning of the Arab Spring revolutions, the channel has been an integral part of every home in the Arab world.

It is not unreasonable to state that the establishment of the channel was the founding and dominant event in the history of the Arab media - and thus al-Jazeera became a "phenomenon", and not just a news and current affairs channel.

The channel's slogan is "the opinion and the other opinion" - and the channel's employees and managers have worked hard to prove that this is the basis of their work.

This interest is reflected in the news broadcast and in the interviewees who hosted in their studios.

The channel was the first Arab media outlet to host an official spokesman for the government or the IDF, a move that initially led to sharp criticism against the channel - but over time, the Israeli interviewee became a regular figure on broadcasts and part of almost every studio discussion.

The Qatari regime decided to establish the channel following an incident with Saudi Arabia, which owns several TV channels, mainly entertainment, leisure and current affairs channels, rather than news.

The purpose of establishing the channel was to influence public opinion and the agenda in the Arab world.

In fact, the regime in Qatar was the first to discover the potential of satellite television broadcasts, and through them the ability to influence the agenda in the Arab world and what is happening in every country and every regime, without being present in that country.

Before social media broke out, Al-Jazeera was the first to broadcast live from anywhere in the Arab world, thus becoming the first and only source of information around the clock and independently.

When all the media in the world quoted and broadcast what was broadcast there - it became the most reliable channel in Arabic, until the Arab Spring period, after the channel sided with the protesters.

Al-Jazeera was the first Arab news channel in history to award a network of reporters around the world, and in some countries the channel's staff included dozens of journalists, a move that gave it great uniqueness in two very large events: the first - 9/11 attacks, There were exclusive materials like bin Laden's recordings.

The second - accompanying the revolutions in the Arab Spring.

Here, it seems that al-Jazeera not only broadcasts what is happening in the squares of Syria, Egypt and Tunisia - it also shapes public opinion and directs events and protests.

Over the years, and following the success of the channel, disagreements and frictions began between the channel and almost all regimes in the Arab world.

The channel's reporters were subject to arrests and even deportation from Arab countries, but the channel did not change its militant line.

Even in Israel, there were attempts a few years ago to close the channel, and more than once there were incidents between government spokesmen, the IDF spokesman and GPOs with al-Jazeera reporters.

If the State of Israel then thought of closing the channel, it is easy to understand what regimes between them and democracy thought or did for light years.
