Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that his country will not initiate a truce with France, against the backdrop of tensions ignited by French President Emmanuel Macron's statements and led to a diplomatic crisis and the closure of Algerian airspace to French air traffic.
Tebboune said in an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, "I will not be the one to take the first step in calming tensions with France, because no Algerian would accept to open contact with those who insulted us."
Tebboune added, “We do not need Macron’s apology for an old event. We want recognition of the crimes of the French against the Algerian people during the colonial period, noting that the French president, through his statements, unnecessarily reopened an old conflict.”
Tebboune expressed his refusal to prejudice the history of his people and insult the Algerians, explaining that the old hatred of the colonizers has returned to the fore, and Macron stands with these statements on the side of those who justify colonialism.
And offensive statements against Algeria made by Macron sparked widespread popular anger in the country and prompted the Algerian government to recall its ambassador in Paris, to express its rejection of the French President’s interference in its internal affairs and the closure of airspace to French military aircraft.
