If traveling to the United States is among your plans, here is what you need to know and what you can expect on your visit to the country during the covid-19 pandemic.

The basics

The United States is set to open its borders to fully vaccinated tourists beginning Nov. 8, after a long season of border closures.

What does it offer?

Nowhere else is the saying that size matters more true.

This giant destination truly has it all: breathtaking scenery, world-renowned cities, culture, cuisine, and some of the best backpacking trips in the world.

Who can enter?

Starting November 8, the United States will be open to receive all fully vaccinated visitors, although there are some particular rules depending on how they enter the country.

This means that unvaccinated travelers from countries that are not within the United States travel bans will not be allowed to enter.

Unvaccinated travelers who cross the U.S. land borders with Mexico and Canada for essential reasons will still be able to enter for some time.

But, starting in January 2022, the restrictions will be even more stringent, as essential-reason travelers from Mexico and Canada will be required to be fully vaccinated.

What are the restrictions?

Travelers from any country can enter the United States beginning November 8, as long as they are fully vaccinated.

This means that it has been at least 14 days since your last dose of the covid-19 vaccine.

The vaccine will need to be approved by the FDA, or have an emergency use approval from the WHO, like AstraZeneca's covid-19 vaccines.

Mixed doses will also be accepted.

Fully vaccinated air travelers will need to submit a negative covid-19 test taken within 72 hours of arrival, and airlines will need to collect contact information for infection tracking.

Unvaccinated Americans can enter, but the rules are slightly stricter.

They must provide a negative covid-19 test taken 24 hours before traveling.

It is recommended to quarantine for seven days and perform a second test three to five days after arrival.

US citizens and permanent residents are not required to show proof of vaccination if entering by land or ferry.

Negative covid testing is also not required.

However, foreigners will need to check their vaccination status and be ready to show a certificate.

Those under the age of 18 are exempt from the vaccination requirement, but if arriving by air, all those over the age of two must submit a negative test prior to travel.

Those traveling with vaccinated adults should be tested within 72 hours of travel.

Those traveling with unvaccinated adults must do so within 24 hours prior to travel.

What is the situation of the covid?

As of November 4, there have been 46.2 million infections and 750,000 deaths in the United States.

Just over 58% of the population is fully vaccinated.

What can you expect on your visit?

Rules vary from state to state, so it's best to check your destination's rules before you travel.

There are mask use mandates, to varying degrees, in Washington City, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Puerto Rico, and Washington State.

In New York, Broadway restaurants, cinemas and theaters, among other venues, are open only to people who have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine or are under 12 years old.
