"Traitor": Threats to Miss South Africa because she is expected to arrive in Israel | Israel today

The country's beauty queen is expected to land in Eilat for the Miss Universe pageant • Meanwhile, many citizens are unhappy with her life and call on her not to go to the "criminal apartheid state"

The beauty queen of South Africa, 24-year-old Lela Maswain, is scheduled to represent her country in the Miss Universe pageant, which will be held for the first time this year in Eilat this December.

As always when it comes to Israel, and even though it is a beauty pageant that is supposed to be politically free, many hostile anti-Israel elements put enormous pressure on Masway to condemn Israel and boycott the competition in what they call the "criminal apartheid state."

The same hostile extremists, combined with quite a few anti-Israel surfers, are flooding the official Miss Universe online competition pages and Massway's personal social accounts with blatant and agitating messages against Israel.

"After weeks of trying to contact Maswain about the Palestinians 'cry, she has decided to block us," read a post on the United States' Instagram page for Palestinian solidarity in South Africa.

"It is clear now that our Miss South Africa does not care about the cry of the Palestinians and it only cares about its interests," it read.

"Take part in Miss Universe in apartheid Israel. Imagine how South African freedom fighters would feel if they knew that a representative of South Africa was visiting an apartheid state. Lala is not my Miss South Africa," tweeted an angry surfer.

Others added: "You come from a country that fought the war on apartheid and you are increasingly supporting a country that pursues policies of apartheid, genocide, torture and deportation. You need to do more."

"Once you are in the spotlight and experience glory you forget about the country you came from. You are not a queen. You are a traitor, a disappointment," it read.

The attack on Masswein became so furious that she created her own hashtag #notmymisssa.

Organizers of the beauty pageant in South Africa who have been exposed to the intensity of the attack and criticism have said they do not intend to take a stand or take part in a political word war.

"Maswin herself is required under official competition regulations to represent her country at any official event included in her commitment as the beauty queen, and is therefore expected to take part in the competition with or without regard to her personal views or position on the matter," it said.
