Western Sahara is at the heart of the dispute between Morocco and Algeria.
Why has the situation escalated?
For thirty years the statute of Western Sahara has poisoned relations between Morocco - it claims the territory as its own - and Algeria - it considers that it is a question of decolonization and calls for a referendum of self-determination for the Saharawis under the aegis of the United Nations. So far, the dispute between Rabat and Algiers had mainly taken the form of a diplomatic war in which everyone tried to influence through reports and lobbying games in the corridors of the UN. Algeria's decision to shatter this status quo by announcing the end of its diplomatic relations with Morocco at the end of August is linked to the official intrusion of a third actor on the ground: Israel.
