Iran's most popular cartoonist, Kambiz Derambakhsh, famous for his satirical cartoons on the modern world, has died of complications from Covid-19 at the age of 79, local media reported on Sunday.

Born in Shiraz, southern Iran, Kambiz Derambakhsh had featured his illustrations in several renowned newspapers and exhibitions around the world during his long career. In 2014, the illustrator received the insignia of knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, during a ceremony at the French Embassy in Tehran. His works have been exhibited in Germany, Japan, Turkey and France, at the Nicolas Flamel gallery. His
"precious heritage, which reflects the life of the Iranian people, will remain in our memories forever,"
Iranian Minister of Culture Mohammad-Mehdi Esmaïli wrote in a message.
The most famous creation of Kambiz Derambakhsh will remain his favorite character of an ordinary man, without a face, a kind of puppet, sketched with a simple pencil line.
A silhouette that has become his trademark.
"It took me several years to create it
," the designer told our colleagues in the online magazine All Culture in 2014.
This character has no nationality, he is without origin and he can do good as well as bad, he can be nice as well as bad.
I have a very special relationship with him.
This character is a bit like my alter ego, like an employee who works for me all over the world.
