1.5 meters wide is "not enough in front and behind".

Freising

- On November 10th, representatives of "Radentscheid Freising" meet with representatives of the city for a first round of negotiations on the citizens' initiative.

The aim, so emphasized representatives of the "Radentscheid" on Friday at a press conference, is to conclude a public law contract with the city, which contains concrete measures to make a referendum scheduled for February 20 superfluous.

The activists now explained in more detail one of the five goals named in the referendum after the opinions in the city council had split. When the city council accepted the referendum on October 11th (we reported), "a certain displeasure" spread among the activists, as Jürgen Maguhn put it. Reason: According to statements by some city councils, the goal of creating structurally protected cycle paths with a minimum width of 2.3 meters on local roads with high traffic volumes or a permissible speed of more than 30 km / h is not compatible with the law. That, Maguhn now emphasized, was wrong. These claims must be vigorously countered. Even town hall lawyer Hanna Sammüller-Gradl has confirmed that. And the guideline for the construction of city streets (RAST) provides for a standard width of 2.3 meters for cycle paths if it is to be possible there to overtake cargo bikes or bikes with trailers. In short: “Legally everything is in the green.” And because they want to build cycle paths that will still take account of the increasing trend towards cargo bikes in 15 years, they will not be satisfied with “small, minimal solutions”. In plain language: 1.5 meters in width are then not enough "back and front".one will not be satisfied with "small minimal solutions". Tempo 30 would have to be prescribed in an emergency

To achieve a width of 2.3 meters, for example, parking lanes or multi-lane vehicle lanes can be converted.

And where that is absolutely not possible, Tempo 30 must be prescribed, said Emilia Kirner.

This is not yet possible on main roads, but it will soon be allowed by the federal government, as Kirner said with a view to the new government in Berlin.

After all, the German Association of Cities has also made this demand.

It is therefore assumed that the new federal government will implement this change in the road traffic regulations "quickly".

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Basically, the initiators of the referendum assume that the city of Freising also wants to implement the stated goals.

At least one will go into the first round of negotiations with the demand to accept all goals and to back them up with concrete measures.

Of course, if in individual cases a width of 2.3 meters is not possible because the structural conditions simply do not allow it, then you can live with a width of 1.9 meters.

A contract shouldn't fail because of such individual cases, they are a little willing to compromise.
