Emmanuel Macron's France is used to raising the tone as soon as an ally, partner or adversary crosses the red lines. And it does not matter whether the words hurt or are misinterpreted, the main thing being to say things, to defend the rank and the reputation of France but also of Europe. Australia and the United Kingdom, as well as Turkey and Mali before them, have recently experienced this. Even the United States, whose President Joe Biden had to wait seven days before being caught on the phone by Emmanuel Macron, after the affront to the French in the so-called Australian submarine affair, learned it from their costs. So when several European countries, such as the Netherlands and certain northern states, but also the European Commission, guardian of the treaties,called on their partners to toughen their tone vis-à-vis Warsaw, even to take punitive measures against Poland, some expected strong reactions from the French president.
