The US mediator between Israel and Lebanon in the negotiations on the maritime border between the countries and the dispute over the gas reserves, Amos Hochstein, emphasized in his talks in Israel today that if no agreement is reached before the Lebanese elections in a few months, he will withdraw from the issue. On the subject.

Hochstein, an American born in Israel, recently took up the post of US Secretary of State for Energy.

He is considered one of the people closest to US President Joe Biden and dealt with the issue in depth when he served in the same position in the Obama administration.

About ten days ago, Hochstein visited Lebanon for the first time since taking office.

He met with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Prime Minister Najib Mikati and other senior officials.

Today, Hochstein arrived in Israel and met with Energy Minister Karin Elharar and a number of senior officials in the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the defense establishment.

Senior Israeli officials involved in the content of Hochstein's talks in Israel said that the US envoy stressed that he did not intend to resume direct talks between Israel and Lebanon that took place until a few months ago at the UN base in Nakura on the border between the two countries.

He stressed that he intends to hold several skipping trips between Beirut and Jerusalem during which he will formulate a compromise proposal that he will offer to the parties.

During his first skipping campaign in Lebanon and Israel, Hochstein did not present any position or proposal, but mostly wanted to hear the positions of the parties.

Energy Minister Karin Elharar emphasized to him that the most important issue for her is the protection of Israel's security and economic interests.

"Hochstein emphasized in talks that he thinks the coming months leading up to the Lebanese elections in March 2022 are a window of opportunity to reach an agreement," a senior Israeli official said.

"He said he did not intend to make an offer that both parties would be happy with but rather an offer that both parties would not be happy with. If within a few months he sees that the parties do not come to an agreement he will leave the issue."
