Report: 85% of charges in 2020 ended in conviction | Israel Today

According to data published by the State Attorney's Office, about 30,000 cases were opened during the last year. • During this period, 4,278 indictments were filed • 144 criminal cases were opened in the cyber unit.


Of all the defendants whose judicial proceedings ended in 2020, 85% were convicted in full or in part.

With respect to an additional 5% it was determined that they committed the alleged offense without being convicted.

This is according to the annual summary report of the State Attorney's Office, which was published this morning (Sunday). 

Among the data published in the report: the amount of manpower in the organization, percentage of convictions, credits, duration of case processing, information on appeals and release committees, etc. For example, the State Attorney's Office notes that about 10% of criminal cases in Israel are handled by The police further state that 4,278 indictments were filed in 2020.

The data from the report show that last year 29,263 cases were opened and in about 70% of the cases a final decision was made within a month. In contrast, in 2019 only in 67% of the cases was a decision made in this period.

The Parole Board rejects 61% of referrals

In addition, it turns out that most of the people convicted are appealing to the district or the Supreme Court.

In 2020, a total of about 2,770 appeals were filed to the Supreme Court and the district courts, about 85% of the appeals were filed by the defendants and 15% by the state.

The report shows that in about 61% of the cases in the Parole Board, the requests for release were rejected and in 39% of the cases it was accepted, about half of them with the consent of the state.

In 2020, DIP filed 64 indictments, 34 conditional settlements were signed and 204 cases were referred to the Disciplinary Department of the Israel Police. Determining that the offense was committed but the defendant would not be convicted, about 11% of the cases ended in acquittal.

In 2020, 144 criminal cases were opened in the cyber unit of the State Attorney's Office, dealing with offenses that occurred in the online space.

The report shows that during the year, the State Attorney's Office employed 2,062 employees, of whom: 1,135 attorneys, 375 interns, 265 administrative employees, 138 students, 104 service members and 45 DIP investigators.
