The Iranian military began today (Sunday) its annual war games in the coastal region of the Gulf of Oman, less than a month before the resumption of nuclear talks with the West. A state television report said units of the Navy, Air Force and Ground Forces, including commando fighters, are taking part in an exercise of more than a million square kilometers east of the strategic Hormuz Strait. Nearly 20% of global oil supplies pass through the Strait to Oman Bay And the Indian Ocean

. It is unclear how long the "Zulpakir-1400" exercise will last, which is reportedly designed to "improve readiness to deal with foreign threats and any possible invasion."

The exercise comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States since former President Donald Trump's unilateral withdrawal from the 2018 nuclear deal.

U.S. officials said last week that Iran had taken control of an oil tanker that sailed under the Vietnam flag in the Gulf of Oman last month, and that it was still holding the ship.

Iran has issued conflicting reports of the incident, claiming that a special force of the Revolutionary Guards thwarted a US takeover of a tanker carrying Iranian oil in the Gulf of Oman and released the ship.

Dramatic excerpts, ostensibly from the event, were broadcast on state television, but no further details were provided about it.

The nuclear deal promised Iran economic incentives in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program, and was intended to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb.

After the United States withdrew from the agreement and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, the Islamic Republic gradually abandoned - and publicly - the restrictions imposed on it.

Tehran said last week that the stock of enriched uranium to 20% of its increased more than 210 kg, more defiant step towards the resumption of negotiations in Vienna after a break of several months.

As part of the nuclear agreement signed in 2015 between Tehran and world powers, Iran to enrich prohibited Uranium to more than 3.67% Uranium enriched to a level of more than 90% can be used to develop nuclear weapons, although Tehran insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only, contrary to Israeli warnings.
