What we know about the Astroworld festival tragedy

Here's what we know about the Houston Astroworld Festival tragedy

At least eight people were killed and many others injured after a crowd marched onto a stage at the Astroworld Festival in Houston on Friday night.

This is what we know:

Crowds surge:

At least eight people were killed and many others injured after a crowd came forward as rapper Travis Scott was on stage at the festival Friday night, authorities said. The live broadcast of the event showed Scott pausing his performance to watch in confusion as an ambulance with flashing lights pulled up to the venue. The festival ended at 11:10 pm local time, Mayor Sylvester Turner said during a news conference on Saturday.

"Dozens" Injured:

"We had dozens of people injured," Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña said during a news conference Saturday morning.

About 50,000 people were at the outdoor music festival at NRG Park - the stadium complex where the Astrodome and NRG Stadium are located - when the incident occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m. ET, they said. the functionaries.

The festival had sold out.

"The crowd, for whatever reason, started pushing and moving towards the front of the stage, which made the people in front compressed, they couldn't escape from that situation," Peña told CNN Saturday morning. .

Concert goers share their stories:

Many people who attended Scott's presentation have shared their experiences. Madeline Eskins is an intensive care unit nurse who detailed the traumatic experience on Instagram. "So, just as he started singing his first song, I looked at my boyfriend and said, 'We have to get out of here.' He said, 'I can't. We can't. "We couldn't. And then I just remember looking up and passing out," Eskins said. "And then I was in and out for a while. I didn't see anything, but I could feel what was happening. Someone threw me over a fence and I sat on a chair, and then I passed out again. And when I woke up, I was in a different area on a chair with a bottle of water on my lap. " Attendee Sarai Sierra said the festival experience was like "drown in a crowded pool. "

Scott releases a statement:

"I am absolutely devastated by what happened last night. My prayers go out to the families and all those affected by what happened at the Astroworld Festival," Scott tweeted. "The Houston Police Department has my full support. as they continue to investigate the tragic loss of life ”.

Investigation continues:

Investigators will review video of the scene and look at how the site was designed and if it had enough exit points, Peña said.

The investigation will explore "what caused, one, the problem of the surge of crowds and two, what prevented people from escaping from that situation," said Peña.

The causes of the deaths are pending the determination of the medical examiner, he said.

Authorities canceled the second night of Saturday's concert.

The security officer fell unconscious:

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said a security officer said his neck got stuck Friday night during Astroworld when he was trying to restrain a concert goer. "We have a report from a security officer, according to the medical personnel who came out and treated him last night, who was reaching out to hold or grab a citizen and felt a prick in the neck. When they examined him, he was unconscious, they administered Narcan, "Finner said during a news conference on Saturday . "He was revived and the medical staff noticed a prick similar to what he would get if someone tried to inject himself. That was part of it." There were "several instances where Narcan was administered at the scene," said Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña,when asked if the medical staff at the festival administered Narcan, a "rescue injection" or "rescue injection" due to its ability to bring someone back from an overdose.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner expressed his condolences to the families of those who were killed and injured at the festival in a tweet posted early Saturday morning. “The City of Houston extends our condolences to the loved ones of 8 people killed and several injured at #ASTROWORLDFest. Organizers held the event to bring people together for music, but sadly it ended in tragedy. Thank you to the police, firefighters and other agencies that responded to help, ”the tweet read.

Previous issues:

In 2019, three people were trampled and hospitalized as thousands rushed into the festival.

The event, now in its third edition, is hosted by Scott, a native of Houston.

Security agent at Astroworld received Narcan after falling unconscious

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said a security officer said his neck got stuck Friday night during the Astroworld festival when he tried to restrain a concert goer.

"We have a report from a security agent, according to the medical personnel who came out and treated him last night, that he was reaching out to hold or grab a citizen and felt a prick in the neck. When they examined him, he was unconscious, they administered him Narcan, "Finner said during a news conference Saturday.

"He was revived and the medical staff noticed a prick similar to what he would get if someone tried to inject himself. That was part of it."

Texas Children's Hospital told CNN that more than one pediatric patient was taken to the hospital from the Astroworld festival that turned fatal last night in Houston.

“Texas Children's Hospital received incident patients at the NRG last night.

Houston Fire Department officials can provide more information, ”said Natasha Barrett, spokeswoman for Texas Children's Hospital.

The hospital did not provide further details.

Local officials are scheduled to hold a press conference at 4:00 pm (Miami time).

A bit of context: Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said during an overnight news conference that a 10-year-old boy had been transported to the hospital.

The Texas Children's Hospital statement increases the number of children affected by this tragic incident.

Houston's Ben Taub Hospital received three festival patients, according to Harris Health System Associate Administrator Amanda Callaway.

Four other people were taken to the Houston Methodist Hospital emergency department, according to hospital spokesman Gale Smith.

A total of 23 people were taken to area hospitals after the incident, 11 of whom were in critical condition, and eight of them died, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña told CNN on Saturday morning.

Spectator of the concert during Scott's performance: "I really thought that if I fell, it would be the end of me"

By Maya Brown

What was meant to be a nice birthday present turned out to be the exact opposite for Sarai Sierra.

Sierra attended the Astroworld festival to celebrate her birthday with five friends and family, and she vividly remembered the countdown clock for Travis Scott's performance on Friday night.

"It all started with the timer and the very strange and slightly terrifying music, the noise that was playing on their stage," Sierra told CNN.

"The noise sounded like something you could be hypnotized with and the countdown or timer would end and then start again."

When Scott appeared, the crowd began to "get furious," he claimed.

I really thought that if I fell it would be the end of me.

I spent at least 15 minutes being pushed due to movement or dance or just because people were 'furious,' "Sierra said.

"Then I saw a 17-18 year old girl being pulled out of the crowd who had already passed out. I saw a probably 14-15 year old girl who couldn't breathe, a girl who was probably 16 years old crying because she I couldn't breathe either. In total, I saw about 20 people who couldn't breathe come out of the crowd and I saw one person in front of me convulse. "

Sierra added: "It felt like we were drowning in a pool full of people."

"We are certainly looking at all the video footage, talking to witnesses, we are talking to the event organizers," Turner said.

Many of the injured continue to be treated, Turner said, adding that many concert goers have been reunited with their families.

Turner also noted that there were some problems with "what was happening inside the arena," but did not specify what those problems were.

Nurse recalls feeling "constant pressure" on her body from the crowd prior to Scott's performance

Madeline Eskins is a nurse in an intensive care unit who attended the Astroworld Festival on Friday night and detailed the traumatic experience on Instagram.

In an interview with CNN, Eskins said that she and her boyfriend had arrived three hours earlier on the stage where rapper Travis Scott had to perform in order to get a good spot.

"About 30 minutes before the performance, a timer was started on the big screen. And all of a sudden, people were squeezing against each other and pushing back and forth," Eskins told CNN.

"As the timer got closer to zero, it just got worse and worse. And I looked at my boyfriend, Sam, and I said, 'We have to get out of here' because I just felt a constant pressure on my chest, a constant pressure on my back. From the side, they squeezed me. I tried to lift my arms to make more room for myself, it wasn't working. "

Things only got worse once Scott started singing, Eskins said.

"So, just as he started singing his first song, I looked at my boyfriend and said, 'We have to get out of here.'

He said, 'I can't.

Hear the Houston Chronicle music critic describe the scene

Credit: Amy Harris / Invision / AP

In his roughly 10 years of covering the Houston music scene, critic Joey Guerra has never witnessed something as tragic as what happened Friday night at the Astroworld festival.

"I've never seen a result on a show like this," Guerra told CNN by phone Saturday morning.

Guerra had arrived at the festival in the early afternoon and during the day saw a "normal festive atmosphere."

When Travis Scott took the stage later that night, Guerra was behind the audience and saw small emergency vehicles cutting through the crowd, but "for a festival, it didn't seem out of the ordinary."

"You see a lot of things like that, people who are carried out by exhaustion or dehydration or things like that," Guerra said.

"He stopped the show, I mean three or four times when he noticed distressed people."

Guerra said Scott sang for about 75 minutes before the set was stopped.

Here's what we know about the Astroworld festival tragedy in Houston
