There are two very special nature conservation projects in the Bachinger Moos.

The highlight: Any citizen can sponsor it, even with a small amount.

Freising

- Two special nature conservation projects are starting in the Freising district: On the one hand, a valuable retreat for endangered bird species is to be created in the Bachinger Moos. In the second project, grazing with endangered domestic animal breeds will preserve a moorland area and develop it further so that a special habitat is created for native wild animal and plant species. The highlight: Every citizen can co-finance the projects and start them off with little money. “This way you can get really involved on site,” enthuses Fabian Eichhorn from the Freising Landscape Management Association, who is on board for the implementation. "Here not a single euro gets lost in the administration". Rather, the projects would be "implemented 1: 1". Farmer Martin Bartl plays a key role in this, who specializes in nature conservation grazing - or his Murnau-Werdenfels cattle and forest sheep. They are supposed to graze the areas.

Curlew and Lapwing should benefit

The

first project

in Bachinger Moos creates a refuge for meadow breeders. These include, for example, lapwing, curlew, skylark and whinchat. “They are among the most endangered domestic bird species in Germany,” reports Franka Pätzke from Agora-Natura, an online marketplace that acts here as a crowdfunding platform - that is, collects the money from private sponsors. In the modern agricultural landscape, the birds would no longer find a suitable habitat and no longer enough food. The project counteracts this, for example with targeted spring grazing with the endangered Murnau-Werdenfels cattle or forest sheep. Fabian Eichorn adds: “The lapwing and curlew are among other target species in the Bachinger Moos and should benefit from the grazing project. On the one hand, a food supply is created by insects, who live on the dung of the grazing animals. On the other hand, the fence and the presence of grazing animals create protection from enemies such as the fox. In addition, the grazing creates a variety of structures that offer protection and shelter for the meadow breeders and their offspring. "

Financing through nature conservation certificates

The

second project

is located very close by.

It is a damp surface that should be further wetted.

The aim here is to show that less intensive grazing can represent a high-quality use for wet bogs in terms of nature conservation.

Grazing also takes place with Bartl's cattle and sheep.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

In order to implement this, one needs above all money for the lease for the first five years and the construction of the pasture fence.

Financing is provided through so-called nature conservation certificates.

For each certificate, which costs four or six euros, 100 square meters of the project area are protected and developed for one year.

However, both projects will only be implemented once all nature conservation certificates have been financed by mid-February 2022 - and this is only the beginning.

“It's an exciting model project,” says Fabian Eichhorn from the Landscape Management Association, “but the funding is not enough on the normal funding line.” Hence the idea of getting private sponsors on board.

"If everything goes well, the projects could also be extended to other municipal or private areas," says Eichhorn.

The projects can be visited

"The projects are certified and can be visited for a period of five years and we are regularly informed about the progress," emphasizes Franka Pätzke from Agora-Natura.

The independent mediation platform offers numerous other quality-checked nature conservation projects in Germany.
