Living Locker: This is how schools make easy money on the backs of students Israel today

2021-11-08T12:32:05.994Z

Absurdity in the school corridors: Students are required to pay hundreds of shekels each year for a book storage compartment, the one-time cost of which is only about 130 shekels • And who sweeps the huge gap? Schools and private companies

For no apparent reason:

the schools charge tens of thousands of shekels for lockers - at the expense of the students 'parents' pockets.

Alongside the entry of digital books into the education system - printed textbooks are still the main means of instruction in schools.

To ease the burden, many schools have lockers - lockers with locks - where books and personal equipment can be stored.

The use of lockers involves a fee, and they are rented to students annually.

In some cases the lockers belong to the school (bought by him), and in some cases they are placed there by a private company that cuts a coupon.

According to student reports, the payment ranges from NIS 100 to NIS 220 - and often the demand exceeds the supply.

However, the "Israel Today" examination shows that there is a clear absurdity that leads to the exploitation of the students: purchasing a locker from a company that produces it costs between NIS 80 and 180 (ie a unit with 12 or 16 cells will cost about NIS 3,000, one-time), and remains Regularly at school.

But the schools and companies rent the lockers to students at an inflated price that reaches even NIS 220 a year.

This is the case every year - that is, even when the school or company has already returned the investment in purchasing lockers.

Revenue is divided between the school’s revenue fund and the operator, and students whose parents cannot pay will continue to carry.

The Ministry of Education does not intervene

In the meantime, the Ministry of Education has refrained from acting on the issue: the CEO's circular does not address the issue of cost or quantity at all - leaving it to management. , An 11th grade student from Haifa. "The cost of renting a locker each year amounts to a very large expense - and not every student can afford that type of expense." According to her, there is a great shortage of lockers - a matter that leads to competition among the students. "I do not understand why the basic need of the students is being exploited for the benefit of bringing extra money into a private company without allowing an alternative. The schools are supposed to take care of us, the students."

According to Omar Shachar, Chairman of the National Student and Youth Council, "Renting lockers in schools is an issue that everyone chooses to suppress, but it is a very significant thing for every student in the State of Israel.

"Today there are students who carry 7-6 kg of equipment to school. It is time to make sure that every student in the country has their own locker."

And it is also possible otherwise: for example, the Naamat High School network decided to purchase the lockers themselves - and rent them out to students at a nominal price.

"After a comprehensive investigation into the matter and to help parents reduce payments for education services, the network will purchase lockers and rent to students at a price of NIS 20 per year," says Yehoram Levy, the network's CEO.

"The sums to be collected will be evacuated for the benefit of the lockers' maintenance."

The Ministry of Education stated: "In the case in question, this is an optional service. From an inspection conducted by the ministry, the collection for this service complies with the procedures."
