Opinion | "In the image of my life": from the attack near Beit Hadassah to the return of the Jews to Hebron Israel today

2021-11-08T14:25:25.367Z

Nearly 100,000 people gathered in Hebron that Saturday, with dozens of tents, a relentless swarm of people who grabbed every vacant corner of the Cave of the Patriarchs

It was the largest "Woodstock event" in Israel - a gathering for "Shabbat Hebron", with almost one hundred thousand people in Hebron.

The media was not.

A conference of a traditional Jewish nature does not interest her.

The spirit of the fathers and mothers buried in the Cave of the Patriarchs was carried by the masses of boys and girls, who embraced the holy place and rejoiced in returning to the holy city of Hebron after the Jewish community was expelled from it in the events of 1905. Peace and joy sang over those who came.

In every available corner, families set up tents and opened a Shabbat table.

In Shapira Alley, a crowded human compound with dozens of tents.

The compilers in the mitzvah preceded by two days with mobile caravans, to occupy a place near the Cave of the Patriarchs.

A large compound was erected right in front of the "Death Alley", between Kiryat Arba and Hebron, where 13 security personnel were killed in a battle with terrorists.

Nearby, an incessant swarm of people.

All public buildings have become mass hostels for thousands of guests.

The houses of the inhabitants were open to all, in the way of our ancestor Abraham.

The huge and magnificent Chabad tent with chandeliers in front of the cave contained 2,500 diners. The Jewish Yishuv Council directs the masses and a river of joy is on their faces.

The human composition is interesting.

There is no majority for the crocheted domes: "The people of Israel!"

The quorums of Sephardim, Breslavs, young people from the Zionist yeshivas mingled with the quorums of Carlebach and his followers, Yemenite quorums and hundreds of Hasidic garments who arrived disorganized.

Both the lite and the traditional are modestly dressed.

Redemption is realized

From a handful of families, students and students of the Rabbi's Center - which Rabbi Levinger arranged to host on Passover at the "Park" Hotel in Hebron - the ancient community of Hebron was re-established and next to it Kiryat Arba, a city and a people in Israel.

For me, it is a personal joy to see the redemption come true, breaking out of the space of time that has passed since that Saturday night when the event that changed my life took place - the attack near the Hadassah House in Hebron.

When I arrived with the doctor at the scene, there were six dead and wounded.

They were hit by a squad of terrorists who ambushed the young men, those who used to come on Saturday nights to sing to a group of women from Kiryat Arba who were fortified in Beit Hadassah, in a demand to allow the Jews to return to Hebron.

Two years of my life were devoted to redressing the injustice that began when the British expelled the ancient Jewish settlement in Hebron after the massacre in 1905, and to revenge through construction.

The redeemed city is ruined by the boys who returned to it.

Little by little redemption grows, though at the cost of blood.
