Due to the volcanic eruption on La Palma, more than 7000 people had to leave their homes.

Two emigrants from Germany described their situation.

La Palma - The volcanic eruption on La Palma has been going on for seven weeks.

According to experts, there is still no end in sight.

The number of earthquakes has decreased somewhat and sulfur dioxide emissions have decreased, but these are normal fluctuations, said Carmen López, spokeswoman for the Pevolca emergency committee.

The eruption of the volcano in the Cumbre Vieja region on September 19th was the first in 50 years on La Palma.

The lava, some of which had a temperature of almost 1300 degrees, made its way over the island towards the sea.

A new peninsula was formed off the coast, which is already larger than 40 hectares.

The lava left a trail of devastation.

More than 2700 buildings on La Palma were destroyed or damaged.

983 hectares are already covered with a layer of lava several meters thick, 283 hectares of which are used for agriculture, mostly banana plantations.

More than 7,000 residents had to leave their homes and get to safety from the lava - including a couple of emigrants from Germany.

The volcano took everything from them.

The house of Jürgen Böhringer and his wife Silvia Heckel is only about one kilometer as the crow flies from the lava-spewing volcano.

It was destroyed by the hot mass.

The two people from Nuremberg will not be able to return there.

"It is not easy," said Heckel the television station Sat.1.

The couple were given 15 minutes by the police to take the most important things out of the house before they had to leave.

The emigrants said that they did not take everything from their house with them.

“Up until the last minute, there was hope that we might be able to go back into the house after all,” explained Heckel.

They were convinced that the lava would stop before then.

"It can't be, somehow there is always a possibility," the Franconian explained her train of thought.

Although the house is worth around 400,000 euros on a slight increase, it was hit by the lava and destroyed.

The two have invested in their own home on La Palma for a total of 20 years.

It was always a goal, explained Böhringer in a shaky voice, "freedom, green meadows".

With tears in his eyes he stated: "Now we have to start all over again."

A man from Holzkirchen fulfilled his lifelong dream and traveled to the Canary Island for the volcanic eruption.

He is overwhelmed by the impressions.
