Eighteen synagogues destroyed by the Nazis in Europe will be virtually restored tonight (Tuesday), to mark Kristallnacht.
Tonight marks the 83rd anniversary of the events of Kristallnacht, in which more than 1,400 synagogues and buildings of Jewish communities in Germany were destroyed by the Nazis, hundreds of Jews were murdered and many thousands were sent to concentration camps.
As part of the memorial events, 18 synagogues destroyed on Kristallnacht will be "revived", for one night, virtually, in order to illuminate and commemorate the richness and diversity of Jewish life that took place in Germany.
The initiative is led by the World Jewish Congress with the support of the Central Council of German Jews and the Federation of Jewish Communities in Austria.

The wide-ranging memorial project will run on Tuesday, November 9, starting in the early evening, during which video performances of the restored synagogues will be screened on post-war buildings and screens placed in the original historic locations where those synagogues stood.
Among the cities where synagogues will be restored: Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne and Vienna.
In some places, passers-by will be able to see the restored synagogues using virtual reality glasses that will be available to them on the spot.
The digital reconstructions were carried out by teams from the Darmstadt Technical University and the Technical University of Vienna.
The events in Germany will be hosted by the Minister of Justice, Christine Lambrecht, and in Austria under the auspices of the corresponding Minister, Alma Zadic, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the European Union on behalf of the Austrian Government, Caroline Edstedler.

The President of the World Jewish Congress, Ronald Lauder, said that "the Nazis damaged the most sacred buildings, buildings that provided shelter and solidarity for the people. The destruction of the places of worship was a sign of the Holocaust. "The collective. These historical intentions reinforce the importance of the mission - to remember and illustrate what was erased in 1938."
Lauder added: "In recent years, synagogues have reopened and brought hope for a more peaceful future. I sincerely hope that this exhibit will make people visit real synagogues and encourage them to create dialogue sessions between locals and Jewish communities around the world."
