Shots were recorded inside the Guayas No. 1 Center for the Deprivation of Liberty (CPL), known as the Litoral Penitentiary and there is one inmate dead, the National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Freedom and Adolescent Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI).
In a couple of tweets, they noted that the incident occurred on Monday morning and that the authorities entered the conflict area and "proceeded to regain calm."
The inmate who was hit by a bullet was taken to a hospital but died due to the severity of the wound.
The prosecution and criminology are investigating the incident, they added.

On October 18, President Guillermo Lasso decreed a state of exception due to the "serious internal commotion" throughout the national territory to confront the escalation of violence and murders in the streets that have generated fear and anxiety among the population.
